West Los Angeles College
Tenure Track Portfolio

Assistant Professor,  2023

Goals:

First, please see my my Goals from 2022 Tenure Review and their status, then please see my Goals for 2023 Tenure Review.

Goals from 2022 Tenure Review:

  • Attract more diverse students to the Hollywood CPR Program through outreach to the following:

    • High schools.

    • ARC.

    • Other schools, such as CSULB.

    • Promotion.

As our enrollment has dramatically increased, we are just trying to ensure we can hire enough people to teach the classes. With that said, I have been focusing on helping with new hires and suggesting adjuncts that will want to continue to teach for us. I also will continue outreach and have a suggestion for our department, as Local 80 already presented ot Vista del Mar Career Center for Foster Youth. Our contact is Channa Shriki.

  • Develop an articulation agreement with California State University, Long Beach.

I have discussed this with Adam Moore and Susan Bloom from the Department of Film and Electronic Arts at California State University, Long Beach. They would like to meet with us and I am working on meeting times.

  • Become more involved with West Los Angeles College by attending events, and being more involved with activities.

I have been as involved as time allows and would like to be more involved. I attended the WLAC Commencement Ceremony in June, 2023, and the Hollywood CPR Reception. Please see my Professional Development Transcript for more events, yet I would like to attend more casual events, as well. Much of my campus involvement has focused on the Student Success Committee, below.

  • Join committees at West Los Angeles College, such as the Student Success Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the SLO Committee, as I am dedicated to supporting student success and to ensuring that students are taught cutting-edge technology in an exciting and fun manner.

I am grateful, happy and proud that I am an official member of the Student Success committee, and as such have done the following, also reported in my Self-Evaluation:

  • September 13, 2023: Officially voted in as a Student Success Committee member.

  • September - October, 2023: Worked with Susan Trujillo, Laura Guichard, and Ebrahim Malekahmadi to expand the West Los Angeles Library's Computer Lab to accommodate students who need Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, and Avid Media Composer. This lab is successfully up and running.

  • October, 2023: Helped with Student Success Committee plan to open a cafe and reopen the cafeteria at West Los Angeles College.

  • October, 2023: Currently researching acquiring furniture for student lounge facilities in ATA building.

  • Teach Introduction classes to Unreal Engine and Unity in order to train students to train to work in virtual production.

Last Spring, I successfully taught the first and only Virtual Production for Film class in the entire LACCD District, focusing on Unreal Engine 5.1. As mentioned in my Self Evaluation, this class was a huge inspiration to students, and resulted in excellent student learning outcomes. Please see my Self Evaluation for more details.

  • Build a virtual production studio at West Los Angeles College.

This action item is being explored. With technology changing rapidly and having secured contact with Ken Nakada, the Head of Virtual Production Operations at Amazon Studios, we are seeking to train our students at Amazon Studios' Virtual Production Volume. Please see Self Evaluation for more information.

  • Write grants to obtain the funds to build this studio.

Please see above and note that we may build a virtual production studio.

  • Meet with ILM to gain advice as to how to build such a studio.

As explained above I have met with Ken Nakada, the Head of Virtual Production Operations at Amazon Studios. With that said, I would like to also meet with ILM.

  • Train myself and my colleagues to work in such a studio.

  • Hire technicians to help run the virtual production studio.

As mentioned above and in my self evaluation, I have done the following:

  • I brought in Eric Rigney, from Mo-Sys, and highly recommended by Local 695, to teach Camera for Virtual Production.

  • I am working with Phil Galler, founder, and CEO of Lux Machina, one of the most important companies in this field, to help us develop our program.

  • I am working with Ken Nakada, Head of Virtual Production Operations at Amazon Studios to secure their Virtual Production Volume as our training facility. I am also reaching out to more potential adjuncts for this purpose.

Goals for 2023 Tenure Review:

  • I am happy to report that after months of research before and during my release time, the following four certificate programs, including additional and revised classes, are on their way to being approved:

    • Virtual Production

    • Animation

    • Gaming

    • VFX

  • My goal is to gain approval for these certificate programs by the beginning of February, 2024.

  • Secure a PC lab for all new pathways above, with all appropriate software.

  • Secure all hardware and software needed for all above pathways.

  • Secure appropriate instructors to help me teach the classes in the above pathways.

  • Expand the above pathways into a robust, program that serves our community well.

  • Continue working on all goals above, for example, secure Amazon Studios Virtual Production Volume at Stage 15 as our training facility and gain knowledge, expertise and training from Phil Galler from Lux Machina.

  • Take another Field Trip to SIGGRAPH. This year it will be in Denver, CO.

  • Take Film Production Students to the American Film Market in Santa Monica.

  • Ensure that our department is healthy, collaborative, non-toxic and that we enjoy working together, so that we can accomplish much more as a team.
